Background of the Study
Family planning (FP) is a cornerstone of reproductive health, essential in reducing maternal and child mortality, and enabling women to space their pregnancies for better health outcomes. Despite the importance of family planning, uptake remains low in many parts of Nigeria, including Zamfara State, where socio-cultural, economic, and educational factors often limit access to and knowledge of contraceptive options (Ibrahim et al., 2023). In response, various strategies have been implemented to enhance family planning uptake, with community sensitization programs led by public health nurses playing a pivotal role in educating communities about the benefits of family planning and the available methods.
Nurses, as trusted health professionals, are ideally positioned to engage with communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas where misinformation and stigma around family planning are prevalent. Nurse-led community sensitization programs focus on raising awareness, dispelling myths, and empowering families, particularly women, to make informed reproductive health decisions. These programs typically include outreach campaigns, workshops, and one-on-one counseling on the importance of family planning and the available contraceptive methods (Adebayo et al., 2024). In Zamfara State, these interventions aim to address the challenges that hinder family planning uptake, such as cultural resistance, misconceptions, and lack of information.
Despite the potential of these nurse-led initiatives, there is limited research on their actual effectiveness in increasing family planning uptake in Zamfara State. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurse-led community sensitization programs on family planning uptake, exploring how these programs have influenced the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the community regarding family planning methods.
Statement of the Problem
Family planning uptake remains low in Zamfara State, despite the known benefits of contraceptive use in improving maternal and child health. Nurse-led community sensitization programs have been introduced as a strategy to improve awareness and reduce misconceptions about family planning, but their effectiveness in increasing uptake has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study aims to assess the impact of these programs on family planning utilization in Zamfara State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led community sensitization programs in increasing family planning uptake in Zamfara State.
2. To assess the impact of nurse-led programs on changing knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding family planning in the community.
3. To identify the barriers to family planning uptake and how nurse-led sensitization programs address these barriers.
Research Questions
1. How effective are nurse-led community sensitization programs in increasing family planning uptake in Zamfara State?
2. What impact do nurse-led community sensitization programs have on knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding family planning?
3. What barriers to family planning uptake exist in Zamfara State, and how do nurse-led programs address these challenges?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led community sensitization programs significantly increase family planning uptake in Zamfara State.
2. Nurse-led sensitization programs improve knowledge and change attitudes toward family planning among community members in Zamfara State.
3. Barriers such as cultural resistance, misconceptions, and lack of access to services are significantly reduced through nurse-led community sensitization programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the effectiveness of nurse-led community sensitization programs in improving family planning uptake in Zamfara State. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing rural populations, variability in the implementation of community programs, and challenges in measuring long-term changes in family planning practices.
